Reflections from our prenatal yoga and birth preparation workshop with Calgary Birth Essentials

Being part of the Birth Warrior Workshop with Sharon from Calgary Birth Essentials felt like stepping into a circle of ancient wisdom — a gathering of women holding space for birth, for change, and for the quiet strength that blooms in vulnerability. There was something profoundly sacred about witnessing mothers-to-be soften into trust — in their bodies, their instincts, and in one another. The energy in that space was tender yet powerful, reminding me how deeply we are meant to support and be supported through life’s transformations.

Understanding Birth Hormones: The Science of Natural Childbirth

We began the day with Sharon’s beautiful exploration of the power of hormones — the invisible dance that guides pregnancy, birth, and the deep instincts of motherhood. I was in awe of the way she wove science and experience into such grounded, graceful language. You could almost see the light flicker in people’s eyes — that moment of understanding that everything we need is already within us.

With over twenty-seven years of experience as a doula in Calgary, Sharon carries countless birth stories in her heart. Each one unique, each one sacred. You could feel the depth of her presence — the way she holds space for every experience with such openness and compassion. It reminded us all that birth is not a single story, but a tapestry of strength, surrender, and trust.

One reflection that resonated deeply was around the idea of a “birth plan.” Together, we agreed that perhaps it’s better thought of as “birth preferences” — a gentle reminder that flexibility, education, and openness can create the most empowering birth experiences. Sharon encouraged everyone to prepare their bodies, learn their options, and involve their partners — not from a place of control, but from awareness and trust.

Prenatal Yoga for Labour Preparation: Building Strength, Flexibility, and Balance

After such a powerful beginning, it was my turn to hold space. We shifted gently into our prenatal yoga practice — a time to move, breathe, and reconnect with the wisdom of the body. I designed the sequence with care, weaving in small, practical tools that could be used during labour, but also in the rhythm of everyday life.

Our focus was on three key elements: breath, balance (of strength and flexibility), and alignment

The breath work included three distinct practices — two to calm and regulate the nervous system, grounding both body and mind, and one deep-breathing technique to create spaciousness — for mother and baby alike. Through this, we explored how the body adapts to carry new life, and how mindful posture and movement can prevent discomfort and misalignment.

The yoga poses themselves were gentle, yet in pregnancy, even the simplest movement — when infused with intention — becomes powerful. We reflected on how too much strength can turn into rigidity, while too much flexibility can cause us to spill out of our own container. As in life, the truth lies in balance. Alignment — physical, emotional, and energetic — is what keeps us steady as everything within us begins to change.

Meditation and Mindfulness for Expectant Mothers: Connecting with Inner Strength

After our movement practice, Sharon guided the group through a deeply centering meditation — a journey inward that invited each mother to connect with her own quiet power. The room softened as everyone sank into that space of trust and inner knowing, hearts open, supported, and seen.

From there, we flowed into something creative — a time to bring words to the feelings that had surfaced. With a table full of colourful pens, art cards, and gentle music in the background, each mother began crafting her own personal affirmation cards. These were not just words on paper, but messages of strength and grounding — touchstones to return to during moments of challenge in labour and beyond.

The atmosphere was alive with laughter, tender sharing, and peaceful reflection. It felt playful and sacred all at once — as though the very act of creating these cards stitched together a shared sense of courage and connection.

Yoga Nidra for Pregnancy: Deep Relaxation for Mother and Baby

Time seemed to melt away, and soon it was my turn to close our circle. Before we began, each mother received a single acupuncture point treatment. It was Yintang, the “third eye” point. This was a simple, safe gesture of grounding and calm. This point rests between the brows and is known for its ability to quiet the mind, ease tension, and draw the body into a state of deep relaxation. It felt like the perfect way to prepare for what came next.

We then moved into Yoga Nidra, a form of guided meditation often called “yogic sleep.” In this practice, the body surrenders to stillness. The mind stays gently aware. It acts as a bridge between rest and wakefulness, allowing true restoration.

During our 20-minute journey, I watched the space soften — faces relaxing, breaths deepening, and bodies surrendering fully. As I guided them through soothing imagery, I silently sent love and strength to each mother and baby. It felt like a collective blessing, a tender wish for the moments of birth soon to come. In my heart, I kept whispering: healthy mamma, healthy baby

We slowly brought the circle to a close. The room was full of calm, quiet radiance. It was the kind that lingers. We had shared knowledge, movement, creativity, stillness, and above all, connection.

Prenatal Resources for Calgary Mothers: Tools to Support Your Birth Journey

As a small gift from our hearts, Sharon and I shared with the group access to a few nurturing resources. These include a pre-recorded prenatal yoga class and Yoga Nidra guided by me. Sharon also provided her guided birth meditation. Each piece was created with care. They offer a way for participants to continue weaving calm, strength, and mindfulness into their daily rituals. These practices support them as they prepare for birth.

We’re excited to offer these same resources to all future Birth Warrior participants.
