Why I Chose Bridgeland, Calgary: A Local Acupuncturist’s 4 (Well, 5) Favourite Neighbourhood Gems

When I first arrived in Calgary from London, UK, Bridgeland felt like an instant yes. Murdoch Park’s open green space welcomed me in, and 1st Avenue NE buzzed with independent shops instead of big chains. Bridgeland‑Riverside sits just northeast of downtown Calgary. The Bow River and C‑Train are right there. This makes living and working here beautifully walk-able.

Today, Bridgeland is one of Calgary’s most desirable inner-city neighborhoods. People love it for its community feel, local restaurants, and markets. That’s exactly why I chose to practice Acupuncture at Encompass Sports Therapy in Bridgeland.

Just over four years into living here, patients often ask between needles: “What’s good around your clinic?” As a registered acupuncturist, I have deep roots in this community. Here are the four Bridgeland spots that fuel my clinic days. They keep me grounded between sessions.

Phil & Sebastian Bridgeland: My Morning Coffee + Breakfast Sandwich Ritual

Address: 917 1 Ave NE (a few steps from Encompass)

Every treatment day in Bridgeland starts at Phil & Sebastian. Their single‑origin pour‑overs rotate with the seasons. Right now, the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe cuts through the morning fog with bright berry notes. It has zero crash.

But honestly? This breakfast sandwich carries me through patient marathons. Made with fluffy eggs, aged cheddar, and crisp bacon. While it is a treat of course and I do not have it every day but when I do, I love it! It is substantial enough to last a full clinic shift. It’s light enough that I still feel clear and focused for pulse‑taking and needling. Pro tip if you like a little fire: extra hot sauce.

In summer, the parkside patio is my planning station. I sit with my coffee, map out treatment plans, and watch Bridgeland wake up around me. Phil & Sebastian captures this neighborhood perfectly—craftsmanship, community, and relaxed, neighborly vibes.

Bridgeland Market: Fresh Groceries + Legendary Cheese

Address: 110 1 Ave NE (5‑minute walk from the clinic)

Bridgeland Market is my kitchen lifeline and one of the reasons I love working as an acupuncturist in Bridgeland. This is not soulless grocery shopping. It’s a curated mix of local gems and special imports. This mix makes healthy eating feel easy after a busy clinic day.

The cheese counter is unreal. It offers burrata for lazy, no‑cook dinners. You can find sharp cheddars for snack plates. There are monthly cheese subscriptions that arrive in perfect condition. Add in organic produce, a house deli, and a bakery that rivals anything downtown. You’ve got everything you need within walking distance.

The team knows me by name now. They flag seasonal treasures (Honeycrisp apples at the moment) and help me throw together simple, nourishing meals between evening patients. Their free delivery in Bridgeland and Renfrew is a lifesaver on those fully booked acupuncture days.

UNA Pizza + Ikuza: When Dinner Decisions Are Solved

Addresses: UNA Pizza + Wine – 69 7A St NE and Ikuza Izakaya & Tokyo Market – 903 General Ave NE (a short walk away in Bridgeland)

Post‑clinic evenings, UNA and Ikuza make dinner decisions effortless. These two Bridgeland restaurants have become my go‑tos when I want to close the laptop and simply enjoy being in my neighbourhood.

At UNA Pizza, it’s all about wood‑fired perfection. The Quattro Formaggi with truffle or the Mushroom/Fontina pizza arrive with blistered, crispy crusts and just the right amount of toppings—never soggy, always addictive. The roasted cauliflower is a non‑negotiable side (I always say I’ll share and rarely do). It’s casual, warm, and perfect for unwinding after a full day in clinic or for an easy date night.

A few minutes away, Ikuza is my choice when I’m craving something lighter. Imagine delicate hamachi crudo that melts away. Enjoy wagyu skewers that satisfy without heaviness. Balance it all with a pot of hot green tea or sparkling water. This way, I can walk home feeling clear and grounded for the next clinic day. The cozy room and sushi counter give serious “Tokyo in Calgary” energy, while still feeling very Bridgeland.

Both spots are easily walkable from my acupuncture clinic. They are also walkable from most of Bridgeland. These businesses support fellow independent businesses. They consistently deliver beautiful food. UNA is comfort; Ikuza is refined. Together, they’re my dream dinner duo.

Marcus’s Ice Cream: The Perfect Sweet Ending

Address: 1006 1 Ave NE (a quick stroll from UNA and Ikuza)

No Bridgeland list is complete without Marcus’s Ice Cream. In a city where people will happily line up for Village Ice Cream, Bridgeland locals have a secret. Marcus holds its own with small‑batch, wildly creative flavours. It offers a space that feels like someone’s kitchen table.

Current obsessions: salted honey lavender (soft, dreamy, and floral) and brown butter bourbon (my “adult dessert” choice). There are always rotating seasonal flavours. They keep things interesting. The house-made cones and waffles take every scoop up a notch.

A post‑dinner walk to Marcus’s has become our family ritual. You’ll see toddlers, teenagers, dog‑walkers, and long‑time locals all lingering outside, catching up over a cone. A single scoop is enough—satisfying, joyful, and never too heavy before bed.

Bridgeland has grown and evolved over the past few years, but its heartbeat has stayed the same: walkable streets, independent businesses, and a strong sense of community.
