Acupuncture for Conception and Fertility

My husband and I spent years trying to conceive, and I was told on the UK’s IVF list that a natural pregnancy was very unlikely โ€” then, just before we were due to start, I found out I was pregnant. I’d been having regular acupuncture throughout that time, and I’ve always believed it played a real part in what happened. We lost our son, Aslan, when he was one day old, and in the hardest months afterward, my own acupuncture appointment was the one thing I never let myself skip โ€” it didn’t take the grief away, but it gave me an hour where I could set it down. That loss is what brought me into this work: I trained as an acupuncturist because I wanted to offer other women the same steadiness I’d been given. So when a patient sits across from me in the middle of a fertility struggle, I’m not guessing at what that feels like.

I’ve shared more of that story, including how it led me to train in Traditional Chinese Medicine, on the blog.

That’s the lens I bring to every fertility patient I see in my Calgary practice โ€” whether you’re trying to conceive naturally, preparing for IVF, or navigating a diagnosis like PCOS or endometriosis. I blend Traditional Chinese Medicine with a clear picture of where you are in your fertility care, and I tailor each treatment plan to your specific history and goals rather than running everyone through the same protocol.

How It Works

Acupuncture won’t replace the medical side of your fertility care, but it may help support it by:

  • Supporting egg and sperm quality for both partners
  • Improving blood flow to the ovaries and uterus
  • Helping regulate hormonal balance and support more consistent cycles
  • Calming the body’s stress response which can interfere with conception when it’s running high for a long stretch

Conditions I Commonly See in My Practice

Women’s Fertility:

  • PCOS and irregular ovulation
  • Endometriosis-related infertility
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Low ovarian reserve
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Thin endometrial lining

Male Factor Fertility:

  • Low sperm count and motility
  • Hormonal imbalances

I see patients at every stage — some are just starting to think about trying, others are deep into a treatment plan with their fertility clinic or OB. Acupuncture works alongside your conventional care, not instead of it; I’m always glad to coordinate with your other providers if that’s helpful.

What to Expect in Your First Fertility Acupuncture Session

Initial consultation (90 minutes): We go through your full health history, your cycle patterns, and what you’re hoping for, plus a traditional Chinese medicine assessment — including pulse and tongue diagnosis — to get a clear picture of your body’s current balance.

A treatment plan built around your timeline: Most fertility patients come weekly for about 3-4 months, since the reproductive cycle takes a few months to meaningfully shift. I’ll walk you through what we’re working on at each stage and why, so this never feels like a black box.

Support beyond the needles: Every plan includes guidance on nutrition and stress management alongside the acupuncture itself — both genuinely affect fertility outcomes, and I treat them as part of the work, not an afterthought.
