Acupuncture for Menopause in Calgary

Dr. Sabina with her mother, the inspiration behind her menopause acupuncture Calgary practice

Why Menopause Management Matters to Me

I am genuinely excited to write about this topic. My passion for menopause management with acupuncture comes from a deeply personal place. When my mum was going through menopause, I was in my mid-twenties — completely unaware of what she was experiencing. Life carried on as usual, and I assumed her transition was seamless because we never talked about it.

Years later, a conversation came up and I made an offhand comment about how easy her menopause seemed. That’s when she opened up. She told me it had actually been very hard — the sleepless nights, the mood changes, the feeling of losing herself. She came from a generation and culture where talking about these things was taboo, so she suffered in silence. It broke my heart that I hadn’t been there to support her through such a difficult time.

My mum is no longer with us, but she’s the reason I do this work. Every woman I get to help feel better through this sacred transition is a way of honouring her. Menopause management has become one of the most rewarding aspects of my clinical practice here in Calgary. There’s something profound about witnessing my patients reclaim their quality of life. This is where I see acupuncture make the most difference. I created this resource to help educate people on how much support this approach can offer.

Whether you’re in perimenopause or fully through menopause, I treat the hormonal transition itself — not just the symptom that’s loudest that week. Most of the women I see in my Bridgeland clinic come in for hot flashes or broken sleep. What we’re actually working with is a bigger shift in how the body is regulating itself. Traditional Chinese Medicine has a long clinical history of treating exactly that kind of transition.

How Menopause Acupuncture May Help Support You

Acupuncture won’t replace hormone therapy or your doctor’s care if you’re already on that path. But it may help support you by:

  • Helping ease hot flashes and night sweats, including their frequency and intensity for many patients
  • Supporting more restorative sleep, especially for the 2–4am wake-ups that are so common in this transition
  • Helping regulate mood and reduce brain fog, which patients often describe as just as disruptive as the physical symptoms
  • Calming an overactive stress response, which tends to make every other symptom feel worse when it’s running high

Symptoms I Commonly See in My Practice

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Disrupted sleep or early waking
  • Mood changes, irritability, and anxiety
  • Brain fog and memory changes
  • Joint aches and stiffness
  • Changes in libido

I see patients at every stage of this transition. Some are just noticing the first signs of perimenopause. Others are years into menopause and still managing symptoms. Some are on hormone therapy and want a complementary approach alongside it. Acupuncture works alongside your doctor’s care, not instead of it. If you’re on HRT or seeing a specialist, I’m glad to coordinate with them.

What to Expect in Your First Menopause Acupuncture Session

Initial consultation (90 minutes): We start with your full health history and your specific symptom pattern. Then we do a traditional Chinese medicine assessment, including pulse and tongue diagnosis. This helps me understand what your body’s transition actually looks like, since it’s different for every patient.

A treatment plan built around your symptoms: Most patients come weekly for the first 6–8 sessions while we work on the most disruptive symptoms. From there, we move to a maintenance schedule that fits what you need going forward. I’ll explain what we’re targeting at each stage.

Support beyond the needles: Sleep, nutrition, and stress management all factor into how this transition feels. I build guidance on all three into your plan.
