During both of my pregnancies, I dealt with sciatica—something I’d never experienced before and haven’t experienced since. The first time, it caught me completely off guard. The pain crept in and I didn’t know what to do with it. The second time around, I knew better. With consistent acupuncture treatments throughout my pregnancy—right here in my Calgary clinic—I was able to keep the symptoms at bay and actually enjoy those months instead of just getting through them.

That experience is a big part of why I love supporting pregnant mammas in my practice. I know firsthand how much of a difference the right care can make—not just for the aches and pains, but for how you feel moving through this season overall. This is a short guide to why acupuncture is worth considering during your pregnancy.

Pregnancy changes everything—your body, your energy, your emotions. Many women in Calgary, including here in Bridgeland, turn to acupuncture for a natural way to feel more comfortable and supported through it all. At my Bridgeland clinic, I use Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to help you move through pregnancy with more ease, from the first trimester through postpartum recovery.

How Pregnancy Acupuncture Helps

In TCM, pregnancy relies on a healthy balance of Qi (energy), Blood, and the Kidney, Spleen, and Liver systems. When that balance is off, symptoms show up.

From a modern lens, acupuncture has been shown to improve blood flow to the uterus and placenta, support hormonal balance, calm the nervous system, and trigger the body’s natural pain-relieving response. It’s a nice complement to the care you’re already getting from your midwife or OB-GYN—not a replacement.

Is It Safe?

Yes. When you see a licensed practitioner trained in prenatal care, acupuncture is very safe throughout pregnancy. Points are chosen carefully for your trimester, and anything contraindicated is avoided.

What Acupuncture Can Help With During Pregnancy

  • Morning sickness & nausea — Often tied to what TCM calls rebellious Stomach Qi. Acupuncture helps settle digestion, and most patients notice relief within a few sessions.
  • Fatigue — Growing a baby takes a lot of energy. Treatment supports the Spleen and Kidney systems to help restore your reserves.
  • Back pain, sciatica & pelvic discomfort — As your centre of gravity shifts, acupuncture can ease tension, improve circulation, and support better alignment—without medication.
  • Anxiety, stress & sleep issues — Treatment calms the nervous system, which often means better sleep and steadier emotions.
  • Headaches — Hormonal shifts can bring these on; acupuncture helps by regulating blood flow and easing tension.
  • Heartburn, bloating & constipation — As baby grows, digestion often needs help. Acupuncture supports the downward movement of Qi to ease these symptoms.
  • Breech presentation — Between 32–36 weeks, acupuncture combined with moxibustion may help encourage optimal positioning.
  • Labour prep — Starting around 36–37 weeks, weekly sessions can help ripen the cervix, support optimal positioning, and encourage more efficient labour. You can read more about labour prep here.
  • Postpartum recovery — Acupuncture continues to help after birth, too—supporting hormone rebalancing, milk supply, and emotional wellbeing in the fourth trimester.
